EXAMINATION SYSTEM IN INDIA
Examination means the test of a student's knowledge in prescribed subjects. An examination creates a sort of care in students to prepare their studies sincerely. Examination may be of various types such as oral, written and practical. Undoubtedly, a new look to the existing examination system is required. Charles Colton said,
"Today examinations are formidable even to the best prepared, for the greatest fool may ask more than the wisest man can answer"
The examiner sometimes forgets that he has to evaluate the pupil's ability; instead he tries to show his own skill and knowledge in the question paper he sets. The National Policy on Education, issued by the Government of India in 1968, mentioned that the major goal of examination reform should be to improve the reliability and validity of examinations and to make evaluation a continuous process, aimed at helping the student to improve his level of achievement rather than "certifying" the quality of his performance at a given moment of time.

Examinations have gathered in a tremendous importance in the scheme of life of a student in India. There is, of course, no denying the fact that examinations are imperatively necessary for the students. No other method is yet in the horizon to assess the merits of the students objectively.
DISADVANTAGES
The existing system of examination with its yardstick fails to measure properly the merit of such a student. A student of gifted intelligence and talent can never remain confined to the narrow zone of his text books. His horizon is wider. On the other hand, a student may be of an average merit. But he guesses with precision about the probable questions; and he reproduces them neatly in the examination. His results may be quite attractive. This anomaly is the creation of the present examination system in India.

The main objective of OES is to provide all the features that an Examination System must have, with the "interfaces that doesn't Scare it's Users!”
Those who have a good memory or can indulge-in cramming; steal a march over others who cannot do this. Then, it is extremely painful to all lovers of transparency that sometimes even the question papers are sold in the market a day or so before an examination. Some efforts have been made to bring reforms in the examination such as the introduction of gradation system, the setting of a number of different question papers, objective questions, etc. But much still remains to be desired and done.
